What is an Inverter and what does it do?

In simple terms an inverter is an electronic device that will convert 12 or 24 volts DC (from a car or truck battery, to 240 volts AC, the same as you would use to run any domestic appliance.
Inverters for use with our low power microwaves need to be able to supply 2000 watts of power, otherwise they will periodicaly overload , and the safety cut-out will trip.
Technical note: The inverters inside panasonic microwaves are different, they step up the 240 volts ac power from the mains to the 3000 volt + needed to make the magnetron work.
